Wednesday, July 14: Update

Claire had another test with the neuropsychologists today. She scored the same on all dimensions except one: Claire followed a simple command today which improved her Rappaport score. The doctor told Claire to raise her arm. She did. Claire had followed some commands with us when not in a therapy session. It was nice to have one of the practitioners witness it and record it as a positive move out of the coma. It also put us in good spirits for the rest of the day.

Today’s pool therapy session was much improved from yesterday. The warm pool and absence of fire alarms encouraged a positive outcome.

All in all it was a good day. Claire worked hard and kept up with the aggressive therapy pace. She crashed around 7:30 PM and was sleeping soundly the last I spoke with my mom. I hope it continues through the night.

My apologies for the abbreviated update. My reserves are running thin and I’m headed for bed. Thank you for all the prayers and support.

  4. Thank you for all the time you put into your daily updates. While they may be for our benefit, they are also for you to share what you wish, unload. We can all only imagine what you have been through, and if you have only one line for the day, that is it. Any line on how Claire is doing, as well as her family, keeps us hoping and praying. Thank you again.

  5. Please do not apologize for a brief message…..It was filled with hope and encouragement…….Feel the positive vibes from all who read and share in Claire’s recovery. We continue to pray also for strength for your family. Rest for the weary and complete healing for dear Claire. I too am one who has felt a recovery is coming from when I first heard about the accident. With our love and God’s care rest and heal. Lov from Conn.

  6. Your posts are very, very special. Not only are you giving us a daily progress report on little Claire–which we follow every day with great eagerness!–but you are opening the door to your own feelings, struggles, triumphs, etc, and inviting us in.

Be assured that there are a growing army of people walking through this with you, and holding you folks up before our Father, who loves to hear and answer prayer.

You’ve been such incredible caregivers to Claire, of course, but it’s also very important that you been the best caregivers you can be to yourselves. You don’t have to be Superman and Superwoman. We pray that God will give you wisdom on taking care of you: getting rest, creating space, having some fun, being renewed in body and spirit, etc.

  7. So very happy to hear the good news of your day yesterday! We keep you in our daily prayers here in South Dakota (although I am a native Texan and I miss Texas very much!) Much love to Claire and your beautiful family!!

  8. We hope that you all had a restful and recharging night!!! That is encouraging news to hear that Claire followed commands…we will continue to pray for more progress!!! Go Claire Go!!!!!!

  9. it’s so wonderful to hear such GOOD NEWS!!!!!! Go Claire!!! we love you and we all believe in you.
Mateo who’s next to me says: tell little Claire that I’ll make her a superheroe drawing….and when she sees the superheroe she’ll get better πŸ™‚
what he doesn’t know is that Claire already has some heroes around her….
    love you, miss you,

  10. My heart lept when I read about her arm. May you continue to see improvements in this sweet blessed child. May you realize we are here to carry you when your tank runs low. May the rest even a little be enough to hold your strength. Bathing Claire in prayer that God’s touch will be seen throughout her body soon!

  11. It’s great to read each day about the progress she’s making. They are baby steps, little by little, but over time they show real progress. How exciting! And all of them are in a positive direction! It doesn’t seem like any door has been closed, on all fronts there is room for continued recovery, which is wonderful. God only gives us what we can handle, and although some days it probably seems like too much, he knows our bounds. Thankfully you have a strong and loving family and extended support team – we are all supporting ya’ll and praying for the best recovery for Claire.

I’m glad she’s enjoying her walks outside around OCH and some sunshine.

PS After she comes home, if at some point you think she, Heidi, and Autumn would enjoy a visit from our furry friend Dodger (therapy dog), just let us know.

  12. Tyler, thanks so much for taking the time to keep us updated on Claire and even the slightest changes or progress – even if it’s brief. We care for you all and are committed to holding you up before our Heavenly Father who knows just how tired and weary you are. Hoping you had good rest last night and praying for a positive day today.
    Blessings from The Ericksons

  15. My name is Dean Halverson, and I live in Colorado Springs. I got to know Ed 2-3 years ago through a men’s group at our church. Ed, another friend named Jim Eberhart, and I get together for breakfast once a month. I was hearbroken when Ed told us the news of Claire’s accident on May 30. I have grandchildren myself, and I can’t imagine the pain you must be experiencing. I will be praying for you and for your precious Claire!
